Why are NOx Sensors So Important for Trucks?

NOx sensors are important for trucks because, according to the EPA’s website, NOx can react in the atmosphere to form ozone and smog. NOx also contributes to climate change, acid rain, and local pollution through the formation of fine particulate matter and ground-level ozone, which cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks and other respiratory illnesses, heart disease, missed work days, hospital admissions and emergency room visits (EPA). This makes NOx sensors important for environmental reasons as well as health reasons.

What Are NOx Emissions

NOx emissions, short for nitrous oxide, are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency because they contribute to global warming and smog. Trucking is a particularly problematic area of concern, but by implementing Nox sensors on all your vehicles you can ensure you’re staying in line with EPA regulations. How Does the Sensor Work

We have a lot of information to cover here. But we’ll start with an easy question first: How does a truck’s emissions system work, anyway? Well, every time you press down on your car’s gas pedal, it activates a vacuum valve inside your engine. This action pulls air into your engine through one set of valves while pushing hot exhaust gases out through another set of valves located elsewhere in your car. Along with hot gases, these valves also release some undesirable particles into our environment—including nitrogen oxide (NOx). Since these particles can cause respiratory problems and climate change when released into our atmosphere, we need to make sure they meet certain standards before leaving our engines.

Commercial vehicles use diesel fuel, which is lower-priced than gasoline and burns cleaner. Diesel engines only produce 5 percent of all particulate matter and NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions combined, but new EPA regulations aim to slash that number. With these changes on their way and costs rising, it’s a good idea to start making sure your truck’s compliant.
